When you think, you are using your imagination to create an image or picture in your mind of an event rather than the real thing. If you are driving home from a football match, reviewing the game in your mind, you are merely imagining what the game was like. The game is no longer real; it's now only in your mind, in your memory. It was real once, but not any longer. Similarly, if you are thinking about how bad your marriage is, you are considering it in your mind. It's all in your imagination. You are literally 'making up' your relationship. The thoughts you are having about your relationship are just thoughts. This is why the old saying, ‘Things aren't as bad as they seem’ is almost always true. The reason things seem so bad' is because your mind is able to recreate past events, and preview upcoming events, almost as though they were happening right in front of you, at that moment ― even though they’re not. To make matters worse, your mind can add additional drama to any event, thereby making that event seem even worse than it really is, or was, or will be.

여러분이 생각할 때는 상상력을 이용하여 실제적인 것이 아닌 사건에 대한 이미지나 그림을 마음속에 만들고 있는 것이다.

 

If you are driving home from a football match, reviewing the game in your mind, you are merely imagining [how/what] the game was like.

여러분이 축구 경기를 마치고 차를 몰고 집에 돌아오는 길에 마음속으로 경기를 복기하고 있다면, 그 경기가 어땠는지 그저 상상하고 있는 것이다.

 

The game is no longer real; it's now only in your mind, in your memory.

그 경기는 더는 현실이 아니며, 그것은 이제 여러분의 마음속에만, 즉 여러분의 기억 속에만 있다.

여러분이 여러분의 관계에 관해 가지고 있는 생각은 단지 생각일 뿐이다. 그렇기 때문에 상황이 보이는 것만큼 나쁘지는 않다'라는 옛말은 거의 항상 사실이다.

 

The reason things 'seem so bad' is because your mind is able to recreate past events, and preview upcoming events, almost as though they (happen) were happening right in front of you, at that moment ― even though they’re not.

상황이 '그렇게 나빠 보이는' 이유는 실제로는 그렇지 않지만 그 순간 거의 마치 바로 눈앞에서 일어나고 있는 것처럼, 여러분의 마음이 과거의 사건을 재현하고, 다가오는 사건을 미리 볼 수 있기 때문이다.

 

To make matters worse, your mind can add additional drama to any event, thereby (make) making that event seem even [better/worse] than it really is, or was, or will be.

설상가상으로, 여러분의 마음은 어떤 사건에든 여분의 드라마를 추가하여 그 사건이 실제로 현재에 그러하거나, 과거에 그러했거나, 미래에 그러할 것보다 훨씬 더 나빠 보이게 만들 수 있다.
