 관계대명사의 제한적 용법과 계속적 용법 

 

1. 제한적 [한정적] 용법 : 관계대명사 앞에 쉼표[,]가 없으며 형용사절이 되어 선행사의 뜻을 한정한다. 해석은 뒤에서 앞으로 한다.

 

2. 계속적 용법 : 관계대명사 앞에 쉼표[,]가 있으며 앞의 선행사를 보충 설명하는 역할을 하므로 앞에서 뒤로 해석한다.

계속적 용법으로 쓰이는 관계대명사는 who, whose, whom, which에 한정되며 and [but, for, if, though, as] +대명사로 바꾸어 쓸 수 있다. 

 

He has two daughters who became teachers. (그의 딸은 둘 이상임) <제한적 용법>

He has two daughters, who(=and they) became teachers. (딸은 둘 뿐임) <계속적 용법>

 

We tried to solve the problem which was impossible. (the problem이 선행사) <제한적 용법>

We tried to solve the problem, which(=but it) was impossible. (the problem이 선행사) <계속적 용법>

목적격 관계대명사의 생략 

 

타동사의 목적격일 때 

Lincoln is a statesman (whom) all the Americans respect.

링컨은 모든 미국인들이 존경하는 정치인이다.

 

The Bible is a book (which) Christians read almost every day.

성경은 기독교인들이 거의 매일 읽는 책이다.

 

Any girl (that) you like and love will be welcomed warmly.

네가 좋아하고 사랑하는 여자면 누구나 따뜻하게 환영받을거야. 

 

전치사의 목적격일 때

Mary is a close friend (whom) I can borrow money from. 

Mary는 내가 돈을 빌릴 수 있는 가까운 친구이다. 

 

Mary is a close friend from whom I can borrow money.

 

Accordion is a musical instrument (which) I am fond of.

아코디온은 내가 좋아하는 악기이다. 

Accordion is a musical instrument of which I am fond.

 

 

 

주격 및 보(어) 격 관계대명사의 생략 

There is a man outside (who) wants to see you. <Here(There) is - 구문의 관계대명사가 주격일 때>

바깥에 당신을 보기 원하는 남자 한 분이 있습니다.

 

This may be the most interesting novel (that) there is in the library.<-관계대명사 + there(here) is ~일 때>

이것이 도서관에 있는 가장 흥미 있는 소설일지도 모른다.

 

You are not the thoughtful husband (that) you were in your thirties. <were의 보어>

당신은 당신이 30대에 그러했던 자상한 남편이 아니에요.

 

Whose is the necklace (which is) on the table? <(주격관계대명사 + be동사) + 형용사구 일 때>

 탁자 위에 있는 목걸이는 누구의 것입니까?
