지시대명사 

 

this · these · that · those

this와 these는 비교적 가까운 것을, that과 those는 비교적 먼 것을 가리킨다.

 

This is my house and those are my friends'.

이것은 내 집이고 저것들은 내 친구들의 집이다

 

강조의 and that (그리고 그것도. 게다가, 더구나)  - that은 앞 문장을 강조해서 받음

The pretty schoolgirl is late for class, and that very often. 

그 예쁜 여학생은 수업에 지각이다, 그리고 그것도 매우 자주 그런다.

 

앞 문장 전체를 받아주는 this, that 

I made no excuse for being absent, and this made my teacher very angry.

나는 결석한데 대해서 변명하지 않았다, 그런데 이것이 나의 선생님을 매우 화나게 했다.

 

 

 

 

 지시부사 

this(이토록, 이렇게, 이처럼) that(저[그]토록, 저[그]렇게, 저[그]처럼 

Did he run that fast?  그가 그렇게 빨리 달렸나요? 

I didn't know she's this selfish. 나는 그녀가 이렇게 이기적인 줄은 몰랐다.

 

반복지시대명사 that · those

His dress is that of a gentleman, but his manners are those of a clown. 

그의 옷은 신사의 옷이다, 그러나 그의 예의범절은 시골뜨기의 예의범절이다. 

 

불특정 다수표현(~하는 사람들) · 불특정 단수표현(~하는 사람)

Those (who were) present were all satisfied but surprised.

참석한 사람들은 모두 만족했으나 놀랐다.

 

Those whom the gods love die young. 

신들이 사랑하는 사람들은 요절한다. 

 

전자	that	those	the first	the former	the one
후자	this	these	the second	the latter	the other

 

Health is above wealth, for this cannot bring us so much happiness as that. 

건강은 부보다 낫다, 왜냐하면 후자는 우리들에게 전자만큼 많은 행복을 가져다 주지 못하기 때문이다. 

 

바로 뒷문장의 어구 또는 문장전체를 받는 this  · these "다음"으로 해석된다.

The questions is this : that he lives to far from downtown.

문제는 다음과 같다. 즉, 그가 중심가에서 너무 멀리 (떨어져서) 산다. 

 

 

 

 

 

such

as + such 반복대명사 

As he is the guest of honor, he must be treated as such. 

그는 주빈이기 때문에, 주빈으로서 대접을 받아야 한다. 

He is the guest of honor, and as such must be treated. 

 

앞에 나온 형용사를 대신하여 보어로 쓰인다.

He is not brave; only he seems such. 그는 용감하지 않다, 단지 그는 그렇게 보일 뿐이다.

 

such as = like(~와 같은)

My wife likes such flowers as violets and tulips. 

나의 아내는 제비꽃과 튤립같은 그러한 꽃들을 좋아한다.

 

My wife likes flowers such as (=like) violets and tulips. 

 

such ~ as to, such as to, such ~ that의 형태로 쓰인다. (~할 만큼, 너무나 ~하여~)

I am not such a fool as to make an enemy of him. 

나는 그를 적으로 만들만큼 바보는 아니다. 

 

His insolence was such as to make all the persons present angry. 

그의 무례함이 너무나 지나쳐서 그것이 참석한 모든 사람을 화나게 했다. 

 

so 

 

앞에 나온 명사(구) 또는 형용사를 받는다. 

I have long been a teacher, and will remain so. 

나는 오랫동안 교사이어왔다, 그리고 (앞으로도) 그렇게 남을 것이다. 

 

Try to be honest and diligent, and you'll be the last winner by being so. 

정직하고 부지런하도록 하십시오, 그러면 당신은 그렇게 함으로써 최후의 승자가 될 것입니다.

 

목적어로서 that절을 대용한다. 

Will it rain tomorrow? - I hope so. (= that it will rain tomorrow). 

 

Will he come back? - I hope not.(= that he will not come back). 

 

so + (조)동사 + 주어 (~도 그렇다) <so가 also, too의 의미를 나타낸다.>

I like Susan very much.     So do I. 

We have been there.        So have Tom and Judy. 

 

so + 주어 + (조)동사(정말로 그렇다) <so가 certainly, indeed, yes의 의미를 나타낸다.>

Mr. Brown says he is rich, and so he is. 

Brown씨는자기가 부유하다고 그러는데, 그는 정말로 부유하다. 

 

She said she would help us. And so she did. 또는 And so she will.

 

so 관용어구 

It may take two days or so for me to finish the work. 

내가 그 일을 끝마치는데 이틀 쯤 걸릴지도 몰라. 

 

They sell pens, pencils, paper and so on. (= and so forth, and[or] the like)

 

the same
