[영어 문법] 조동사 would, shall, should의 용법

1. Would의 특별용법 

 

1) 과거의 불규칙적 습관 (~하곤 했다)

Father would often read for hours without eating anything. 

아버지는 종종 아무것도 먹지 않고 수 시간 동안 독서하곤 했다.

 

Sometimes we would wander aimlessly when young.

가끔 우리는 젊을 때 목표 없이 방랑하곤 했었다.

 

2) 과거의 거부, 거절, 고집 (~하려고만 했다, ~하려 하지 않았다.)

They would not listen to me, whatever I might say.

그들은 내가 무슨 소리를 하든 내 말을 경청하려하지 않았다.

 

The little boy would have everything in his own way.

그 꼬마는 모든 것을 제멋대로 하려고 했다.

 

3) 과거의 추측 (~이었을(~되었을) 것이다

I think she would be in her thirties when she got divorced. 

나는 그녀가 이혼했을 때 30대였을 거라고 생각한다. 

 

4) 현재의 소망(=wish to), 의도(=intend [mean] to)

Those who would rise in the world must work hard. 

출세코자 (소망)하는 사람들은 열심히 일해야 한다. 

 

would rather A than B (B하느니 차라리 A 하는 편이 낫다 [하고 싶다]) 

 

I would rather be a gentleman than a hero. 

나는 영웅보다는 차라리 신사가 되고 싶다.

 

I'd rather not meet her any more.

나는 그녀를 더 이상 만나지 않는 편이 낫겠다.

 

You had better not to go to school today.

너는 오늘 학교에 가지 않는게 좋겠다. 

 

 

2. Shall의 특별 용법 

 

1) 법령, 규칙, 명령, 계율 

The president shall hold office for five years. 

대통령의 임기는 5년으로 한다.

 

Thou shall not kill. 살인하지 말지니라.

 

2) 예언, 운명적 필연 

All men shall die. 만인은 죽을 것임이라. 

 

Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

하늘과 땅은 없어질지나 나의 말은 없어지지 않을 것이다.

 

 

3. should의 특별용법 

 

1) 현재의 의무, 충고 (~해야 한다, ~하는 것이 좋다 [바람직하다])

Children shouldn't be left on their own. 

아이들만 남겨두어서는 안 된다.

 

We should obey and respect the old. 

우리는 노인들의 말씀에 순종하고 존중해야 한다. 

 

2) should have + p.p (~했어야 했는데) <과거동작이나 상태의 미실행에 대한 유감 표시>

 

You should have been a little more careful of yourself. 

너는 좀 더 몸조심 했어야 했어.

 

She should not have fallen in love with the prince. (~하지 말았어야 했는데)

그녀는 왕자랑 사랑에 빠지지 말았어야 했다.

 

3) It is 이성적[주관적] 판단 형용사 ~ that ~ (should) ~. 

It is necessary that Sally (should) be present at the meeting for him. 

Sally가 그를 대신하여 모임에 참석할 필요가 있다.

desirable, essential, fair, important, impossible, insistent, natural, necessary, proper, reasonable, urgent, right, wrong 등등

 

4) It is 감정적[감성적] 판단형용사 명사 ~ that ~ should (~하다니) ~. 

 

It is strange that you should know so little about it. 

네가 그것에 대해서 그렇게 조금밖에 모르고 있다니 이상하다. 

 

It is a pity that he (should) have failed again. (~했었다니) 

그가 다시 실패를 했었다니 유감이로구나. (감정적)

 

5) 결정, 경고, 권고, 동의, 명령, 소망, 요구, 재청, 제안, 주장, 총구 뜻의 동사 및 명사 +that ~ (should) ~.

 

He insisted that she (should) pay the bill at once. 

그는 그녀가 즉시 청구서 대금을 지불해야 한다고 주장했다. 

 

The king commanded that all the people (should) be assembled at once. 

국왕은 모든 사람들이 즉시 집합하도록 명령했다.

 

It was proposed that he (should) stay with his uncle. 

그는 삼촌과 함께 머무는 것이 어떻겠느냐는 제안을 받았다. 

 

The general suggested that another war might break out. (암시[시사]하다)

그 장면은 또 다른 전쟁이 발발할지도 모른다는 것을 암시[시사]했다.

동사: adivse, ask(요구하다), agree, command, decide, demand, desire, insist, move, order, propose, recommend, request, require, second(재청하다), suggest, urge, wish 등  명사: advice, agreement, decision, proposal, recommendation, requirement, suggestion 등등
