추상명사 

 

감정, 성질, 상태, 주의 등 구체적 형상이 없이 관념상으로만 존재하는 추상적 개념을 나타내는 불가산명사로서 원칙적으로 부정관사가 붙지 않고 단수형으로만 쓰인다.

 

Sleep is necessary for good health. 수면은 좋은 건강을 위해 필요하다.

My wife has some knowledge of English literature. 나의 아내는 영문학에 상당한 지식을 갖고 있다.

May God give my son the wisdom of Solomon! (의미의 한정을 받으면 the를 붙인다)

하나님 저의 아들에게 솔로몬의 지혜를 주소서!

 

 

추상명사의 정도, 수량표시

(01) a useful advice → a useful piece [word, bit] of advice

(02) a piece of information [news, fortune, folly, good luck, nonsense]

 

추상명사의 보통명사화

(03) Necessity is the mother of invention. 필요는 성공의 어머니이다. <추상명사>

(04) His English grammar book is a necessity for all the students. 그의 영문법서는 모든 학생들에게 꼭 필요한 것이다. <보통명사>

(05) Failure is the mother of success. 실패는 성공의 어머니이다. <추상명사>

(06) He may be a failure as a father, but a success as a scholar. 그가 아버지로서는 실패작일지도 모른다. 그러나 한 사람의 학자로서는 성공작이다. 〈보통명사>

(07) The lady is proud of her beauty. 그 숙녀는 자신의 미모를 자랑한다. 〈추상명사>

(08) But no one regards her as a beauty. 그러나 아무도 그녀를 미인으로 간주하지 않는다. (= a beautiful woman) 〈보통명사>

(09) Speech is sliver, silence is golden. 웅변은 은이요, 침묵은 금이다. <추상명사>

 

추상명사의 집합명사화

Can you understand the passion of youth? <추상명사> 당신은 청춘의 열정을 이해하실 수 있습니까?

Youth(= Young people) should respect age(= old people). 청년들은 늙은이들을 존경해야 한다. 〈집합명사>

The youth of this small country seem to be full of ambition. 이 작은 나라의 청년들은 야망으로 가득 차있는 것 같다. <집합명사>

 

have the + 추상명사 + to부정사 (~하게도 ~하다)

 

The native had the kindness to help us find a well. 그 원주민은 친절하게도 우리가 우물 찾는 것을 도와주었다.

The native had the kindness of helping us find a well.

The native was kind enough to help us find a well.

The native was so kind as to help us find a well.

The native was so kind that he helped us find a well.

The native kindly helped us find a well.

 

all+ 추상명사 all +복수보통명사 추상명사 + itself

= very[extremely] +형용사

 

Their son is all attention. (= all eyes and ears = attention itself= very attentive)

all obedience= very obedient)

all smiles(= very smiling)

all beauty= very beautiful)

all civility= very civil)

all hospitality=hospitality itself = very hospitable)

all kindness(= kindness itself = very kind)

 

of+ 추상명사 = 형용사구

Your idea is of importancelconsequence, moment] (= important)

He is a man of great ability (= a very able man)

Jane is a young woman of promise. (= a promising young woman)

 

 

명사의 부분표시

부분표시어

분수, all, a lot(많음), lots, most(대부분), none(전혀 없음), percent, some, the majority(대부분, 대다수), the rest(나머지), etc.

 

문장의 주어가 부분표시어일 경우에는 「부분표시어 + of (~+에서)」 다음의 명사가 복수형이면 복수동사로 단수형이면 단수동사로 받아준다.

 

All of the people are from the same village. 

All of the money in the safe is the widow's.

Two-thirds of these students study very hard.

Two-thirds of his work has not been finished yet.

The rest of them are not yours but somebody else's.

The rest of it is mine, not hers.

 

불규칙변화 복수명사

모음만 변하는 경우 ... foot-feet, tooth-teeth, man-men, woman-women cf. German- Germans, Norman-Normans, louse-lice, mouse-mice

어미에 -en을 붙이는 경우 ···· child-children, ox-oxen

 

단복동형	Chinese, Japanese, deer(사슴), sheep(양), fish(동종의 물고기), salmon(연어), dozen(12), means(수단, 방법), score(20), series(일련, 총서), speries(#종), won, yen, percent, offspring, swine

 

외래어복수- 주로 라틴어와 그리스어에서 유래한 것이 많다.

 

agendum(비망록) -> agenda(의제)

baterium(세균) -> bacteria

stimulus(자극) -> stimuli

alumna(여자동창생) -> alumnae

formula(공식) -> formulae/-s

larva(애벌레) -> larvae

index(색인) -> indices/_es

analysis(분석) -> analyses

crisis(위기) -> crises

criterion(기준) -> criteria

phenomenon(현상) -> phenomena/_s

 

 

복합명사[복합어 합성명사]의 복수

 

가장 중요한 단어 [중심단어]를 복수로 하는 경우

arms dealers, blood types, book stores, brothers-in-law, by-standers, door knobs, hotel rooms, lady-doctors, passers-by, step-mothers, tooth-picks, tree trunks

 

두 단어 모두를 복수로 하는 경우

men friends, men-servants, women- doctors

 

명사를 포함하지 않는 복합어인 경우 (대체로 첫 단어가 동사임)

forget-me-nots, go-betweens, grown-ups, have-nots. mery-go -rounds, touch-me-nots

 

(상시) 복수 [절대복수]

두 부분이 하나의 짝으로 된 기구나 의류(복수취급)
